No one knows exactly when stone dogs first
appeared, but the dogs have become a part
of Vietnamese culture in the North and many
other parts of Vietnam. According to Vietnamese
legend, a poor student was on his way to
an examination in the capital. When he passed

For Nguyen Thi Lan Anh from Hai Phong, becoming
pregnant was a disaster rather than a cause
for happiness. Three months into her second
pregnancy, her husband took her to a private
clinic for the sex of the child to be indentified.
When the answer was “a girl”,
a family meeting was organized where every
member of the family tried to convince her
to get an abortion. Her husband is the eldest
son, so a boy was necessary for the sake
of what is known as “saving the family”.
